Odessa was named in the 1880s by a Russian immigrant Peter A. Demens, who was instrumental in financing the Orange Belt Railway, which ran from Sanford to Trilby to St. Petersburg. He also named St. Petersburg. Odessa was originally situated in Pasco County; today it extends into northern Hillsborough County. The latest US Census data from 2000 indicates that the town has population of 3,173.
